Aubergines - pah

I really hate aubergines. I recognise that this dislike is irrational as I don't really mind the taste of aubergines it's just everything else about them...
the way they look like haemorrhoids (large haemorrhoids I concede but haemorrhoids nonetheless)
the way they look so manky when they're cooked
the way they soak up oil so I envisage biting into a sponge full of lard.

I have a friend who is mildly disconcerted by pomegranates, (they don't look inside like what you'd expect apparantly) but most people don't seem to have this problem with everyday things. So if you have any irrational dislikes I would like to know so I don't feel so weird.

A pile of aubergines in the shop catching the light wonderfully and they are a lovely blacky/purpley colour.

They taste rubbish though.

I have an irrational dislike of people with irrational dislikes.
But, as you might have guessed, it is the Chalfont allusion that I find intriguing. I, of course, have not had the exposure that you have had in the course of pursuing my profession, but do they really look like that? (I will believe you, no photographic evidence necessary). Which end? Green spiky bits and all?

Swedes (the vegetable). Roasted. Looks too much like roast potatoes and always catches me off guard. Can't eat swede at all. Yeuchh. And celery. Not sure why.

I suspect your aversion to aubergines is due to the fact that you have been unlucky enough to see countless haemmorhoids in your line of work, for which you are to be pitied, as it is a noble vegetable!

I can relate to this matey...when other people cook them..they look nice...but when I cook them they always taste like sponge and lard.

I also have a real aversion to mackerel. I can't even look at it without gagging. It smells bad and it just *is* bad.

My veg dislike is even more daft - I can't stand cauliflower, although I adore broccoli (which, in all honesty, is just technicolour cauliflower).

But I do like the old purple zeppelin. Do you want my recipe for baba ganoush (aubergine dip)? Or, even better, lentil moussaka? Might change your mind...

Mmm... lentil moussaka.

thankfully i came to love aubergines long before i found out about their haemorrhoid resemblance (um, today)

same goes for haggis - not the haemorrhoids thing, but the sheep's stomach lining and innards thing

i irrationally (though not to me) dislike calamare chopped into rings: makes me think of anal sphincters

sorry

i love aubergines, me. can i have the dipping recipe? and the lentil moussaka? please?

irrational dislikes? marrow. what's it for?

oh, and jamie oliver, of course. although that maybe ought to be filed under "rational".

Last week someone gave me a marrow???
What do I do with it?
It's sitting there making me feel guilty.

The only vegetable I actively dislike - as opposed to-could-happily-live without - is okra. Nasty, slimey, bitter.

Marrows are just terminally dull. It's all about what you stuff them with to give them flavour, which is a bit like aubergines. But aubergines are very pretty. The prettist veg of all is Romanescu broccoli with its little lime green spires.
