"McKnight went on to become the first woman in US history to be convicted of foetal homicide by child abuse. An appeal to the US Supreme Court failed and she is serving a 12-year jail term." Holy crap! Speechless!
Who were the prosecutors though? The government? Did the doctors shop her? Brain is overloading with questions...
Frightening stuff. I re-read 1984 recently and what was really scary was how little of an imaginative stretch it was from our 'civilised' society' - the incubator approach seems like more of the same. Let's hope we have a revolution before they bring out the rats.
From a personal view point, I am ashamed to say that I smoked through all 3 of my pregnancies (I did try to give up - honest and I know members of the medical fraternity who whilst trying had similar difficulty - you know who you are Realdoc) Anyway I certainly found a difference in attitudes from the 'no big deal' with my eldest child (9) to the being given a public dressing down by complete strangers with my youngest (3) interestingly this was not the same with medical staff. Suffice to say I'll be giving Arkansas a miss.
If these people cared what happened to the babies after they are born I might take a different view but there are no resources available to help these unfortunate women and as soon as the child is born he is labelled a 'problem' and has an ASBO or some such slapped on him. Also why is it that the so-called pro-life brigade are also very much pro capital punishment. It's not life they respect they just want to impose their values on people less fortunate than themselves. Annie I hope the docs didn't shop her but in the old US of A docs are involved in torture in Guantanamo so who knows what they might do. Still, Medicins Sans Frontiere and The Medical Foundation for the Victims of Torture are still working for the side of the righteous so we're not all bad.
I am a GP
Married with 2 kids.
I live in an isolated, culturally backward part of the country.
I am a recent convert to cyberspace thanks (mainly) to Green Wing. The picture is not me by the way but probably what you all think lady doctors look like.

It's all very Aldous Huxley isn't it?
Unfortunate chap, Huxley. Died on the day of the Kennedy assassination. Bad timing that, not much room on the obit page I'd imagine.

*speechless with lapsang streaming out of my eye*
It's all a bit barefoot-pregnant-you-are-an-incubator-not-a-person-baby-machine stuff isn't it?
Just read on...
"Labour MSP Duncan McNeil has proposed adding oral contraceptive to prescription methadone"
How long before he (and it's always a he isn't it) suggests sterilising them?

Sterilisation! Yes! what a good idea - but obviously not the blue eyed blondes . . .
