Addicted to the internet?

I heard on the radio that doctors are going to be asked to quiz patients on their internet addictions as a clue to other addictive and potentially health-threatening behaviours..... oh dear.

Plus first in what is sure to become a longrunning theme:

NOVEL EXCUSES BY FRIENDS NOT TO COME AND VISIT ME IN NORTHERN IRELAND #1

"The vernacular architecture makes me wince."*

*She has a point.

So, um, how often do you have to use the internet for it to qualify as an addiction?

I can stop any time I want, you know...

Damn, Annie beat me to the comment I was going to make...

It's not addictive. Or if it is, so what? The fact that it hurts when I blink my throbbing bloodshot eyes is just a sign that I'm, like, really alert for danger or something. It's a survival thing.

I don't think I /can/ stop any time I want. I've spent way too many hours at my mother-in-law's house in the country, north of Perth, desperately trying to get Internet working over a phoneline that was partially cut through by some farmer or other backing his tractor into the telephone line poles... and did it ever occur to me to do something ELSE? {sigh} I am an addict with 25 years of addiction. I don't think I will be cured any time soon. I think I'd better hide from doctors. Er, wait...

I;m not sure that excuse will stop RoMo from the plan she has recently hatched...

I would put a link in but my laptop is playing up...suffice it to say, Romo has plans for a minibus, via Bristol to pic up Spins and "fajiterrrrs" on it's way to you...architecture or no...

I'm thinking of forming Webaholics Anonymous Neural Knowledge Exposure Reduction Society but I can't come up with a catch acronym.

I like the vernacular architecture.

We've got two weeks off in the summer without access to the internet. We'll see which one of us comes out in a cold sweat first.

Geoff, there'll be no problem. A break from blogging will do us the world of good.

Besides, I'm sure there are internet cafes somewhere in Cornwall. Some of them may even be as close as twenty miles to where we are staying.

I wouldn't call it an addiction just a requirement of everyday life like breathing

I think we must apply the same criteria to internet use as to alcohol ie if you drink less than your doctor you must be ok. So interms of internet access you'll all alright as long as your doctor is like me and not like an old partner of mine "what do you call the thing on a string again?"

Is there rehab for web addicts? I can just imagine sending them on a walking holiday - they'd be looking for internet cafes.

It's not too bad in summer - I can get out and aboutm but in winter the web is more interactive than telly. Actually I can use the web while watching telly or listening to music and manage to snuggle the cat at the same time (no that isn't a euphemism for doing summat while surfing dodgy sites).
