Posting in a vacuum

I'm not sure what is happening but it seems that non-beta bloggers can't post comments on my blog at the moment. This is very irritating. Does anyone know anything I can do to solve this problem other than quitting and re-registering somewhere else and losing my archive? I don't want to move if I can avoid it. Blogger help, known issues etc have been no help at all.

I can at present, but only if I don't log in.

People who are non-Beta should be able to comment if they click on "Other" in the Choose An Identity section under the comment box, then type in their blog "name" and URL.

Unfortunately this doesn't work on blogs that don't allow anonymous comments - they don't allow you the "Other" option.

It's like throwing a message in a bottle, isn't it! Or contacting BT Broadband Customer Services.

The difference between Beta-Blogger and the vacuum cleaner is that one has a "sucking force" etc.

I'm off to allow anonymous comments - thanks for posing the question Realdoc and thanks for answering it the Bettster!

Hello Realdoc. Moving is a pain, in many ways, though I'd tell new bloggers to go with wordpress. But maybe there is somewhere you can move to with a beta-archive. I know wordpress only takes the alphas currently, though maybe that will change. Or beta is to stop people jumping ship. Dunno. Anyway, I think I can comment...

I solved it yesterday by signing up for a Google account; this means I leave comments on beta blogs (as I suspect this comment is going to do) which lead in a trail to a non-existent beta blog called Dave; other blogs will accept the proper blogger sign-in and take you to 'Life is...'
It won't allow me to use the 'other' or 'anon' options.
However, I noticed an announcement by Blogger yesterday that the beta version now has all its wrinkles ironed-out (!) and so they will shortly stop calling it beta - and will insist that all we alpha males must switch.
Boo.

I have heard on the grapevine that blogger is going to move everyone to beta whether they like it or not. Batten down the hatches, gird your loins to fight the invaders.
(Or at least backup your archive)

Most of the time I can't post as other or anon. I just get the word verificatin screen over and over again.

When I moved to beta I had some similar problems for a while, then they all resolved themselves and went away.
I don't think there are any long term problems with beta. The only thing I lost when I changed was the customisation of my layout, which some folk thought was crap anyway.

Sorry if this is predominantly data. I will be back to the normal turnip up the arse next time.

i'm not having any problems with Beta, so i don't think we need to fear the change too much. just go with the flow. resistance is futile.

It's like bloody Brave New World. But there aren't any gammas to bring us drinks.

Just testing.

Oh no. I have no link. Sans link. Linkless.

It's like being sent to Coventry.

Anonymous said...

I've been to Coventry, Annie. It's not so bad.

Oooh it worked, but I don't have my avatar. *sulks*

CB - I keep trying to post comments on your blog, but beta won't let me :(

Anonymous said...

I just now figured out the picture of the Hoover!

F**k Beta - I can't even be 'Other'. It's Mangonel here.

Anonymous said...

Wyndham here - just to say I'm having trouble leaving comments -

Anonymous said...

Dave here - yesterday's trick now won't work.

Good thing you haven't posted anything new today, and so we don't need to comment.

We blame you, you know, for converting to beta.

Anonymous said...

Ooh, I must try again - it is me patroclus!

Anonymous said...

Woo!

Forgotten what I was going to say now, mind.

FirstNations here...
apparently the easiest thing you can do for us remaining luddites is to allow anonymous comments, whereupon we have to beep the 'anonymous' radio button and then comment. whereupon subsequently in response blogger will post our pearls of wit under the 'anonymous' bar sinister.

Anonymous said...

...woops-
because 'anonymous' will accept anything, whereas 'other' just filters out the non-beta Bloggers and spits on our necks in contempt.
thank you.

I do and always have allowed anonymous comments. I have been beta for monthes. Why has it all gone tits up now, that's what I want to know.

'cause it's the holidays and everything always goes tits up at the holidays. murphy's/sod's law.

Realdoc, I've just got round to listening to your podcast - excellent stuff, and that Nina Simone song is a staple at Quinquireme Towers/Chateau Quinquireme. Also, you have a very lovely voice. More please!

Erm, that was me patroclus, obviously.

A lot of Beta Blogs have been having this problem and a few of my favourites are looking at moving options.

If I can't get in to comment on a site I just move on. Sometimes I will try again, sometimes I don't bother. I never email the person concerned so it is possible they will never notice there are problems. One or two sites went from open to Blogger only and I stopped visiting. No point. I don't want a Google account, there's enough big brother elements in the Internet world already.

You can import from Beta to Wordpress but there are risks and it's not straightforward.

The best way is to download Wordpress and a couple of add-ins that allow you to create a Wordpress blog offline on your PC. You can then import from Blogger, sort out any layout problems etc before uploading to your online Wordpress blog. (For people who host their own blog.)

There are a couple of sites with advice on this but I haven't found the links yet. (I saved them on my PC but can't remember where.) If I find them I'll pass them on.

I tried commenting yesterday but Blogger wouldn't co-operate. :)

Ps.
This is now my 3rd attempt (in minutes) at getting it to accept the comment.

By the way that was me baggie. This is churap

Anonymous said...

Right - I'm going to try again after a few days of frustration and liasing with Blogger Support (Stockings - and rather baggy unhelpful ones at that I must add).

Anonymous said...

oh feck arse - that was me - Rockmother - although it said Rockmother login here I have the original problem of it just refreshing and asking me for a new word verification. Other - the same - anonymous is so far so good but it wouldn't even let me be anonymous the other day. Also - somnething that Blogger support seem to be ignoring and something I keep telling them is that when I press Publish Your Comment a little thing pops up in the progress bar saying javascript VOID(0). Oh my god - it's so boring - I can't cope! Let me out - I refuse to join beta - no no no! And realdoc - don't move - we'll all just have to be anonymouses. Rockmother xx

Anonymous said...

That took two attempts by the way - aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Anonymous said...

I don't have a blogger account, so I am trying to leave a message my usual way, using Other...

Anonymous said...

Well that worked fine - I do sometimes have to do the word verification twice, and I don't put anything in the website box, but it does mean you can leave your name.

Zig said...

The only place I can comment as me is from my laptop - and then only sometimes . . .

testing testing 1 2 3

I'm adding this bit cos it didn't like it when I tried commenting the above, but it has given me a new wv so it might work this time!

I get that java script void as well - I think it is Vicus - his was the first one it came up on!

testing, testing

the whales said...

...i'm not beta, by the way...

Anonymous said...

Whales - you are obviously the chosen one and very special - you've broken the beta barrier! And you've got a picture - not fair - it doesn't like mine - mind you Olive from On the Buses wasn't much of a looker was she?

rockmother said...

Hang on - this is an experiment. Testing testing - if this works then perhaps all is going to be ok after all children.

rockmother said...

Fookin' ell - by jove - it worked - I'm going to try again.

rockmother said...

That was non-beta to beta - it's working (at the moment) - well that's a relief. Yawn yawn - let's hope all the little teething troubles are sorted now.

patroclus said...

Let's not forget that Blogger is still free, and they host millions of blogs, so tech support isn't going to be the greatest. I'm sure they'll fix these problems as soon as they can... if they haven't already...

patroclus said...

Yay!!

Dave said...

Hurrah! What Pat said.

I love everyone at Blogger Central and let never a cross word be spoken against them.

realdoc said...

Hurrah does that mean the bloody thing is fixed now?

llewtrah said...

Am I back?

llewtrah said...

By golly, it worked!

This article is the culmination of an intensive search of all the information out there on vacuum. We learnt a lot and you're bound to, too.
