In fact when, as a student I lived in the worst bit of the worst place to live in the UK.........
Murder Mile, Hackney
I didn't get murdered but a strange man did approach me at a bus stop once and asked for a fag but didn't say please.
In fact when I lived in the worst bit of the worst part of the UK I lived in a house which, as the result of a bizarre building accident*, had no toilet for 2 months. This necessitated frequent visits to the pub and the pinching of catheter bags from work.
I was an object of derision in the neighbourhood for being over 21 and not yet having had a baby but other than that and the perilous state of our plumbing it wasn't a bad place and had the bonus of being on the route of the Number 38 bus, one of the superior bus routes in my opinion.
* The landlord, a mate of mine met a guy in the pub who said he could fix the bathroom cheap. He fixed it but unfortunately after he left the upstairs loo fell through the floor and landed, by coincidence on the downstairs loo, smashing it to bits.
So, how shit was your day?
*UPDATE* All blogger links from here appear to be down I hope that wasn't me.

My day was so shit that I wrote a beautiful post dedicated to my son who is deployed in Iraq, and blogger ate it. Thank you for the laugh, I needed it!
It was spectacularly unshit in such a marvellous way I am still feeling a bit faint. But not goat-like.
But Tuesday was total pants.
Who sez that Hackney and Tower Hamlets are two of the worst places to live in the UK. What a lot of bollocks, they are vibrant lively places,(and there is always something interesting going on, even if it is murder). They are in London - one of the greatest cities in the world IMHO - I have driven through some really dreary, no-hope, tarmacked, semi-suburban wastelands on the edge of nowhere - they are the worst places.
Realdoc - your attempts to put some fancy links in Patroclus' blog have brought the web to its knees. Right now i'm struggling to catch up on Molly's story.
ps - i think i recognise that location. Do i? It looks dangerously familiar.
It's Clapton Pond, whalester, apparently the place in the U you are most likely to get murdered.
I was under the impression Tower Hamlets was the new Camden, whatever that might mean.
billy...?more piercings, can that be possible?
Yes i did recognise it. Friend of mine lives round there. Caught the bus from there many a time. Not my favourite place in the world...
Hello Doc of Real - my new rather lasklustre podcast is up. I sat uip half the night doing it and fell asleep between tracks - it's not very good but I did it anyway. I've already told Dick off for making such a fuss and then not listening to it IMMEDIATELY! And that goes for you too! xx
I can't believe that Nrn Irn isn't top of the list.
That story about the loo falling through the floor was brilliant. I'm rubbish at linky things as well. I just don't get all those linky bits and brackety wotsits. So, I'm with you on that.
I used to live in New Cross, which is also a little bit scary. But, never had a scary thing happen to me. I think sometimes the reputation is worse than the reality don't you think? Murder mile? I mean, talk about reputation! Goodness me...
The good thing about it, is when you tell people where you live, there is usually a harsh intake of breath and people say,
'No, really?' and they think you are well hard and you get street cred. I like that. Hee hee. I'm about as hard as a marshmallow.
I lived in Lewisham in from 1980 for four years. I remember somebody being knifed to death getting off a bus because he looked at the assailants girlfriend. During the Brixton riots a neighbour asked me quite seriously whether I would go with him and loot the very famous music shop in the High Rd if a riot kicked off in Lewisham. It didn't. We very nearly had a falling khazi, too. Only two ceilings fell in in the end.
Don't even start me on London.
How dare they? Hackney is NOT the worst place to live in the UK. I've lived in Hackney, and in Finchley (erstwhile constituency of Maggie Thatcher). Finchley was worse.
(And good grief, Realdoc! Lucky you weren't in the downstairs loo at the time... what a way to go!)
I had a pretty good day followed my a dismal weekend (poxy footle lost ..ggrrr and I am attempting to re-decorate by bedroom so everything is a mess) As for dodgy areas of habitation. I spent my uni years in Dundee which could be a pretty dangerous place if you wern't careful. There were certain areas (like most cities) you didn't venture into unfortunatly I spent most of my time living in them...ooopppss (cheep rent) I do rember in my 2nd year that we never used to get much sleep as there was always a fight in the pub on the corner so we either had the police, the paramedics or both in attandace from about midnight till 6am
Realdoc - re: the track you liked on my pod - e mail me via my profile and I'll send you the mp3. Was it the one that was very long and a bit like a protest song about Vietnam or the other one which was a terrible version of Everybody's Talkng About Me (nilsson)?
